Dirt Dawgs walk off over Suns in home finale
LEOMINSTER, Mass. (Wednesday, August 7, 2013). Tyler Mikrut’s (Southern Indiana) walk off RBI to score John Boyd (Quinsigamond) proved to be the difference as the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs defeated the Pittsfield Suns 4-3 in Wachusett’s home finale.
The Dirt Dawgs (19-30) trailed on two different occasions in the game, but battled back both times to earn the win in 11 innings.
“We really showed our heart out there tonight,” said Scott Lettre, Director of Baseball Operations for Wachusett. “This was an exciting game for the fans, and a great last home game for the 2013 season.”
Relief pitcher Rob Bertucci (MIT) earned the win for Wachusett, pitching 5.1 scoreless innings; he allowed three hits, struck out three, and walked one.
Nate Pajka (Bates) led the Dirt Dawgs with three hits, and Austin Mock (IUP) added two RBIs.
Kevin Marciano (WNEC) played strong defense for Wachusett, making several webgems at shortstop, and scored a run thanks to some heads up base running.
Dirt Dawgs’ starting pitcher Kyle Zaorski (IUP) went 5.2 strong innings, allowing three earned, on five hits, while striking out two. He took a no decision on the evening.
Ryan Olmo (URI) led the Suns (24-26) with three hits.
The Dirt Dawgs will take on the Suns for the third straight day tomorrow, only this time on the road. First pitch is at 7 PM.
